All the comments in this thread ring true to my experience with 5Rhythms. I certainly value dancing alone with myself, comforted under the loving blanket that 5Rhythms provides me. Yet, I doubt that I would have gained nearly as much had it not been for the sharing with other dancers after the dance.

Over the last several years, I have taken on the role of promoter for various types of conscious dance, primarily 5Rhythms, in the Washington, DC area. It has given me a very interesting perspective in that I have to negotiate the needs of my tribe on one hand and the team of facilitators I have on the other. All of the facilitators love the meditative aspects of 5Rhythms. That goes without saying. And often n the beginning, it has been their wish that the dance end in silence and everyone would then glide off the dance floor in a state of contemplation and out the door. The problem was, few of the dancers were making connections with each other. There was nowhere nearby for our dancers to go for food or a drink. And DC is a large city with horrible traffic, so meeting elsewhere was quite difficult. Consequently, our tribe was not creating bonds amongst themselves at the regular dances. So we started offering free snacks afterwards. The result is that we often have dancers there, chatting away, more than an hour after the event has officially ended. And we have much stronger bonds amongst our tribe members.

So, note to "Anonymous": It's quite possible that I know your 5Rhythms facilitator. If you'd like to share that with me, perhaps I can intercede on your behalf. If you want to contact me privately with that information, you can find my contact email at our dance website: www.DCConsciousDance.com

thanks for sharing your experience. the interplay of exploring my own body, heart, mind and soul with dancing and connecting with others is part of the healing lesson of 5rhythms. life does require us to be alone and, as brené brown says, we are also hard-wired for connection. 5rhythms has strengthened my life dance of moving in and out of these two states and everything in between.

in new york, we often eat together after class and time spent together has been amazingly enriching. do you dance in new york?

you might want to take a workshop if you haven't yet. the workshops go deeper into the experience and classes reinforce what i have learned in workshops and would be very different without that experience.

it's important to note that the class itself is not a social event, although it is fun and full of life and connection. it's a spiritual movement practice. we are not there to meet people, although you will. this is a practice for a different purpose. but as a bonus, it has created some of the deepest friendships i've ever had.

as much as I love 5 Rhythms most times I leave feeling exhilarated but yet lonely and somewhat sad. I guess it's seeing so many people expressing theme-selves so beautifully , but so isolated. Sure sometimes we find others to share with, but most times I find others difficult to approach. As much as the instructor tires to bring us together as soon as her instruction ends we tend to isolate again.

Is it our nature ? Is it a woman's nature to be cautious ? I just feel like it as an isolated practice - but I guess in the end so is life...?
